Holidaymaker saves girls from drowning Andrew Board A Christchurch man is being hailed as a hero after saving two Nelson girls off Rabbit Island on Saturday afternoon. Wattie Mortimer, 42, was at Rabbit Island with his wife and two young daughters on the final day of their summer holiday when he heard the cry of help. Two Stoke girls, said to be aged 10 and 11 by members of the Nelson Coastguard, were onboard a $75 inflatable boat when strong winds and an outgoing tide took them away from their mother, who was sitting on the shore with a toddler. Wattie’s wife, Christine, said she asked the lady if she’d like her husband to go after them as they realized they could be in real trouble. Wattie was already in his wetsuit and was swimming in the surf with his daughters when he heard the cries. “People were screaming and yelling out that those kids are out in the boat and drifting, so I started wading out.” Another woman, only known as Kirsty, was in the ocean teaching her young daughter how to

After a few minutes of swimming “Kirsty” gave the board to Wattie. “You looked like a big guy who could get out there, I’m only 45kg and didn’t think I’d be able to hold them,” she told Wattie in the Nelson Coastguard building after the

incident. Wattie took the board and continued to paddle out to the girls. He says it felt like he was swimming for ten minutes and he was “exhausted” when he got to them. “I got to them and I knew I couldn’t go back. The wind was just dragging us out and down

A major renovation for Stoke’s Turf Hotel The iconic Turf Hotel is getting a major overhaul, with diggers ripping down the Hotel’s restaurant and parts of its upstairs accommodation. Part-owner Andy Dwyer says the hotel was built in three phases and the final section, built in the 1960s, was deemed a risk in the event of an earthquake. “It was understrength, so we’ve decided to be pro-active and revamp the area that needed strengthening.” The hotel has two double-storey sections. The part of the hotel on the corner of Main Rd Stoke and Songer St was built in 1907 and passed the earthquake test. The second section next to it was what was added in the 60s and what is coming down.

beach and that he was talking on his mobile phone. At the same time he tried to keep the girls calm. “They went from not knowning the trouble they were in, to embarrassed that a helicopter or big boat might be needed to rescue them, to quite scared.” He says they were also very cold and he told them to lie down in the boat to avoid the strong winds. In total, the inflatable drifted more than a kilometer and for 45 minutes before the Coastguard – which was on another rescue – arrived. “What a relief that was, a huge relief,” says Wattie. Pete Kara of the Nelson Coastguard says the girls were hypothermic and

terrified when they got to them. “But they are going home to mum and dad tonight because of the actions that he [Wattie] has undertaken. He made our job so much easier because he kept them calm.” Nelson Harbourmaster Dave Duncan says Wattie is “absolutely a hero”, but was furious that the girls were out on the inflatable to begin with. “Kids going out in little inflatable’s that belong in swimming pools in criminally neglectful in my opinion. “However, they were there and they are extremely lucky that there were other caring adults on the beach because if they weren’t there, then it would be a very different result for those parents today.” Wattie’s youngest daughter Caitlyn, 6,

had no doubt about what she thought of her father’s actions. “You’re the greatest hero,” she told him. His reward? “Maybe after dinner you can go back to the beach, because you didn’t get much time there,” she suggested. As for the man himself, Wattie says he’s just thrilled it worked out. “Swimming out there, I was thinking that it’s always the guy that rescued them that drowns and that’s what was going through my mind. ‘Shit, I’m going to be the guy in the paper’. “I’m just glad everyone gets to go home to their families.” The Coastguard is made up of volunteers who give up their time to help save lives. The fire that destroyed the newly-created Menzshed at Omaio Village in Stoke has left founder Rex Lucas “distraught”. Rex could do nothing but stand there and watch as his tools and thousands of hours of work went up in flames, when the shed and caretakers area caught fire last Wednesday. “We nearly had a heart attack when we came back to see all the flames, firefighters and people outside the shed,” says Rex’s wife Pam. Fire units from Stoke and Nelson arrived on the scene around 3.30pm and had to rip open the fence amidst gas bottle explosions to get to the heart of the fire. Stoke station officer Dereck Nilsen says the Menzshed and a couple of outbuilding were fully involved in fire when they arrived. “At this stage we’re unsure of the cause, but there is extensive damage throughout the property. Other than that we've got everything under control. No one was injured or around at the time, which is a bonus." Crash causes large power outage: A car smashed into a major power substation on the corner of Oxford St and Wensley Rd in Richmond last week. Eyewitnesses say they saw the car drive straight through the roundabout and into the box which caught fire and cut the power to homes in Richmond, Hope, Brightwater, Wakefield, Waimea Plains and Mapua. Eyewitnesses say several bystanders helped pull the car off the transformer. Richmond Volunteer Fire Brigade chief Ralph Lonsdale says he was first alerted when the lights in his house flickered. “There were some quite big booms as I drove past, the power box was doing some more explosions,” says Ralph. Network Tasman Limited CEO Wayne Mackey says it has been a big job to fix the box. “It’s most definitely one of the biggest [faults] we’ve had for a while.” He says it should be fully restored by the end of this week.

Tourists crash on Waimea Road: A family of tourists had an unfortunate start to 2016 after they crashed their rental car into a parked van around 7 pm on New Years Day. The crash was opposite the Nelson College sports field along Waimea Rd and has left both vehicles severely damaged. Sergeant Stu Wright was the first serviceman on the scene and says the van involved was parked and unoccupied. “The RAV4 has just been driving down the road and he’s drifted off to the left and hit the parked van.” The cause of the drift is unclear but the police are investigating.

Oversight leads to $140k tax bill for horse racing club Simon Bloomberg

The Nelson Harness Racing Club is facing one of its biggest challenges in its 125 year history, after an accounting oversight has left the club in a desperate financial position facing a $140,000 tax bill. The club should have been celebrating its 125th anniversary at its two-day summer meeting on Friday and Sunday. Instead, there was a sombre mood among club officials who somehow need to find $140,000 to pay the Inland Revenue Department after overclaiming GST on stakes payments for the last four years. Club president John McKenzie says he was devastated when he was informed about the accounting error in mid-October. The club had been claiming all the GST on stakes paid to winning owners and trainers, instead of just those who are GST registered, for the last four years, resulting in over-claiming by an estimated $140,000. John says the club informed the IRD about the error “immediately”

and although he has not yet had a response he expects to get a tax bill for the full amount. There is also a possibility that the club will have to pay late payment penalties, placing an added burden on the already cash-strapped club. “It’s going to make it tough for us, but as far as I am concerned it’s not going to be the end of harness racing in Nelson. There are rumours out there that this will be Nelson’s last race meeting, but they are just rumours - we are going to get through this.” John says he’s disappointed it was not picked up sooner by their auditors. “The club’s auditors should have picked it up in the first year, so they’ve got some questions to answer as well. It was only detected by a junior who had just started work for the auditors after graduating from university.” John says the club involved the sport’s governing body, Harness Racing New Zealand, “very early on and, while they can’t help us financially, they have been very helpful providing advice.”

‘Act of kindness’ as candy canes put on kids' graves The relatives of deceased babies buried at the Marsden Valley Cemetery received a surprise when they visited the graves of their children this Christmas. An anonymous couple has warmed hearts by placing miniature candy canes on each infant grave in the Marsden Valley Cemetery’s baby section for Christmas Day. Shanna Thompson was one of the mothers who visited her child on Boxing Day to find a candy cane on her daughter’s and brother’s graves. “When I was visiting my daughter there was an elderly couple with a basket full of candy canes up

Home-made outfit wins Fashion in the Field Simon Bloomberg

Nelson's Angela Miller could well be considering changing her career from graphic designer to fashion designer, after winning the Richmond Mall Fashion in the Field at the Nelson Harness Racing Club's meeting at Richmond Park on Sunday. Angela won the popular contest ahead of runner-up Ange Leonard and thirdplaced Hannah Korner and 40 other ladies, who added plenty of style and colour to Nelson's biggest race day of the year. And she did it on a modest budget, making her black straw hat and black skirt herself and purchasing her hounds tooth-patterned top from Farmers to create a timeless "vintage look" that impressed all the judges. It was the second time Angela has won the contest after taking the crown in 2014. She also completed a double for the meeting after winning the Best Hat contest on the first day on Friday, again with one of her own creations. "I like to dress up, but I don't to spend heaps of money on it so I make all this it myself," Angela says. "It took me a about a week to make the two hats and I made the skirt as well, but the top is from Famers." Head judge Leonie Trathen says the

She says the judges, including Black Sticks captain Anita Punt, had a difficult job selecting the winners from 43 very stylishly-dressed ladies. "It was a very close call but we thought Angela's classic vintage look was amazing," Leonie says. "She did very well making a lot of it herself, too." Canterbury visitor Bruce Gasson was judged the best dressed man with Nel-

son's Samuel Woodward second in the field of 12. "The men really out did themselves today," Leonie says. "There were only 12 of them but they were all amazing." Nelson's Chey Habib, eight, Tiana Simpson, nine, won the best dressed boy and girl contests, although Chey admitted he had a little help from his mum Shelley selecting his outfit that included his dad's tie. Tiana wore a white dress and hat. More from the races on page 22.

Queens Gardens to host art expo Jessie Johnston

Whether you’re an art enthusiast or simply want a day out in sunny Nelson, everyone is welcome to Art Group Nelson’s annual exhibition. Located in the picturesque setting of Queens Gardens, the event has been showcasing the talents of the local art group for over 30 years. Over 50 exhibitors will be present on the day and thanks to the groups varied artistic styles, people can look forward to seeing displays of painting, photography, mosaic, glass work and woodwork. Among those who will be exhibiting this weekend are Sharon and Bernard Carroll, who have been members of the art group

since they moved to Nelson 18 months ago. Now retired, Bernard and Sharon say they love creating unique pieces and spending time with the inspirational people that make up Art Group Nelson. While Sharon is passionate about mosaics, a style she was introduced to just after the Christchurch earthquakes, Bernard uses nature as the inspiration for his mixed media pieces. Both artists are looking forward to the Queens Gardens exhibition this weekend and the chance to talk to the people who are buying their art - taking in their feedback and shar-

ing some of background information behind their pieces. The Queens Garden Exhibition will be running for one day only, on Saturday, January 16, from 10am until 6pm. Eftpos is available and all artwork on display is

for sale. Should the weather be poor on the day, the exhibition will be postponed until Sunday, January 17. Anyone interested in joining Art Group Nelson is welcome to call the groups president Lyn Broughton on 545 0500.

Classic bikes come out of sheds and on display Brittany Spencer The Classic and Vintage Motorcycle Show kicked off the year for motorcyclist enthusiasts with 66 bikes out on display, from Triumphs to BSAs and Well bikes. The show is a chance for members to shine their machines and show the public why they love their bikes. Classic and Vintage Motorcycle Club President, Ian Goeten, says the day was absolutely brilliant. “As soon as the doors were open we had people coming in, we had hundreds in the first few hours and a dozen people signed up to the club. “We had about 66 bikes on display, all varying in age, price and value, there were bikes as old as 1910 and worth anything between $150,000 and $10,000.” The second day of the show was a swap meet, in which people could buy, sell or trade motorcycle parts and memorabilia. “Each year, it’s like an Aladdin’s cave for motorbikes,” says Ian. The club run several events and hundreds of rides each year, but Ian says it all boils down to a passion for keeping the classics on the road. Here, have a business, for free

FREE TO A GOOD HOME: Roadhogs mini golf on Selwyn Pl will be given away to a local after its owners decided to move on and, instead of closing the doors, decided to give it away. The business is located next to McDonalds Nelson and has been operating since December 2014. Photo: Brittany Spencer.

Andrew Board The owners of an indoor mini golf business are ready to move on, but instead of selling it on the open market, they’re going to give it away. Troy Warring says he and his wife Joanne started Roadhogs a little over a year ago to provide a “passive income”, but that it hadn’t worked out that way. “My wife and I both work five days a week at our other jobs, then I work on Saturdays and she does Sundays, so we just don’t see each other. For some people that’s a good thing, not for us.” Troy says the business, which is next to McDonald’s on Selwyn Pl, pays its way but it needs an “enthusiastic” person to take over. “We chucked $20,000 into setting it up. That work is done now and it has a lot of potential. It’s not going make millions, but it ticks over Last days of and it supports itself and it pays wages,” he says. “There’s a lot that could be done that we just don’t have the energy for.” He says they considered closing the business but then thought it would be a shame to see a viable business close down. “Because Nelson Trish Gray is an outdoor destination, it is hard when the Save up to weather is good, but as soon as it turns bad,Colourplus Long Summer we’re chocka.” At the moment Roadhogs is only open during school holidays and weekends. Woodburner proposal not affordable: I've made a diary note for October 2016, not to vote for the 7 councillors, L Acland, M Lawrey, P Rainey, M Ward, R Copeland, K Fulton, and B McGurk, who have ensured that Nelson continues to have the strictest woodburner regulations in the whole of New Zealand, by voting against a proposal to allow affordable woodburners in parts of Nelson that have no air quality problems.

Nelson Weekly

Opinion

TUESDAY 12 January 2016

If you are concerned about community well-being and would like to see people have affordable home-heating options in the future, you may consider doing similar. Harry Pearson.

The wood burner review was supposed to get affordable heating into people’s homes before next winter. People came to the public meetings and told of cold damp houses, sick children, the cost of doctors visits and electricity prices. Those councillors who voted against allowing affordable burners have no empathy for those people because they did not attend the meetings. Is that how they sleep at night, with a wood burner keeping them warm or a salary that allows them the luxury of just turning on the heat pump LIMITED when they are cold. Councillors can't do much about people’s salaOffering an experienced, efficient, ries but they did have a chance to cost effective service for all your do something that people could afford. amazing 2016. Chony Murphy. That is so lovely. It is so hard being so far away from our wee Katelyn's grave, especially at this time of year, but it warms my heart to hear that such a thoughtful person has done such a wonderful thing. Thank you so much. Lauren Morris. Such a lovely gesture, our daughter is buried in Wanganui and I know I have people taking care of her grave, but it is so nice to see it happening here as well. Sending love, not only to the wonderful person who did this, but to the parents as well. Sarah-Hope Bailey. How amazing of this person to acknowledge babies taken too soon. Thank you to whoever you are. You remind their parents and families they aren't forgotten. Felicity Watson.

Amazing people. Reassurance to know there are others out there that care, a fantastic loving gesture. A reminder to all of us whom have lost a child that we aren't forgotten. Andrea Besseling. So lovely, my boy is in a different section with his granddad, but we take him flowers on Christmas Day anyway (although he would probably prefer candy canes). Rebekah Joy. What a beautiful heart this person has! Thank you! Delma Taukei'aho.

Makes me happy just reading this. We need more people like this in the world! Amber Armstrong. Anger of sacking of roading chair: Councillor [Eric] Davy was removed from his office in what was a calculated and devious attack by seven of his colleagues. Claims of it being a governance issue were nothing but a red herring. The proper course of action, if it was an issue of governance, was to lodge a Code of Conduct complaint, but these seven chose to use a Notice of Motion because they knew they had the numbers and that would guarantee the result they wanted to stack the RLTC with anti Southern Link councillors. Expect a backlash. Cynthia McConville. Double standards by councillor Luke Ackland talking about councillors following correct process. As chair of the Wood Burner committee, Cr Ackland didn't follow the Terms of Reference in having public consultation, reason given "it would have taken too long" What a joke! That's what you get for electing lawyers, manipulation of the rules, spin and double standards, that's when they can bother turning up to meetings they are paid for. Graeme O'Brien. Antiques show a treasure trove Locally Owned and Operated

Yesterday’s junk was today’s treasure at Saturday’s Nelson Collectables and Antiques Show. People piled through the Nelson Suburban Club doors to peruse and purchase all sorts of antiques and get their family treasures valued. The Nelson Bottles and Collectables Club run the event every two years, but member Judy Pittman says it’s more than just old bottles. Across the 40 displays there was plenty to see, with everything from Victorian mourning clothes, money boxes, vintage signs, coins and police hats. “We do it to show people what our club gets up to and also just to get our collections out, dust them off and let the public see them. There’s always a lot of interest and something rare and unusual will always come out of the woodwork.” Member and local collector John Heeman brought his extensive coin collection to the show. “I’ve been collecting

No access to parts of Rutherford Park as work continues

Parts of Rutherford Park surrounding the Trafalgar Centre is now closed, while work continues on earthquake strengthening the centre. The “work site containment fence” around the centre was expanded on Monday to include most of Paru Paru Rd. The fences will also move to the edge of the Maitai Walkway, with no vehicle access beyond the old Community Art Works building.

The footbridge across Saltwater Creek between the Trafalgar Centre and Haven Rd will remain closed in the immediate future. The footbridge at the northern end of the Maitai Walkway, to Queen Elizabeth Drive, will remain open. The fences are expected to remain in place for around three months. Later in January, access to the old tennis court area will also be restricted as the Rutherford Park development work continues.

The very first piece in my collection was a copper cigarette lighter from Paris, it had an English coin on one side and a French coin on the other side, and that’s what started me off.” John has everything from coin spoons, coin jewellery, penny farthings and even a cheeky chocolate coin. “Not many

people notice, but I’ve got a chocolate coin on display too. My granddaughter gave it to me for my collection so I told her I’d put it in the show, and there it is,” says John with a proud smile. Next year, the club will host even more collectors and visitors at the Trafalgar Centre for the National Bottle and Collectables Show.

Local building apprentice earns scholarship Trent Knapp has wanted to be a builder ever since watching his dad on the tools when he was a youngster. Eighteen year-old Trent’s dreams have come true after being awarded the Nelson Registered Master Builders’ apprentice scholarship and landing a job with Nelson builder Jason Gardiner. The scholarships were first awarded in 2012 after the association decided that the building industry needed more skilled staff and needed to train more apprentices. Trent will receive $575 per year for three years from the scholarship, which he can spend on industry costs, tools or education. He recently left Nelson College where he was part of the Gateway programme, which allowed him to work one day a week for Jason Gardiner over the past few months on a new build in Atawhai. Trent is stoked at being awarded the scholarship. “It’s pretty handy to buy tools and help pay for the apprenticeship. “My old man is a builder in Gore and has his own company, and when I was younger I went round with him. I wanted to be a builder as I like being outside working.” Ultimately he’d like his own company, but for now his focus is on completing his apprenticeship. “Trent has shown ability beyond his age and experience,” says Paul Brockie, Registered Master Builders Nelson branch president. “New build owners Laurie and Rachel have been impressed with his communication and attitude. They say he’s a pleasure to have on site. “With these attributes, I can see Trent excelling in the building industry and with the support of Registered Master Builders will, in turn, become a role model showing excellence in building.”

Young athletes from Nelson and Richmond will be lacing up their track shoes and putting their training to the test when they compete in the 38th Colgate Games at Saxton Field Athletics Track, starting on Friday. The 2016 Colgate Games, New Zealand’s National Junior Athletics Championship for children aged seven to 14, has received more than 2000 entrants with 39 from Athletics Nelson and 67 from Athletics Richmond. Only 59 from the from the entire top of the South Island competed in last year's games in Dunedin, and Colgate New Zealand general manager John Garside says he is thrilled to see such a high level of participation supporting the local event. “The Colgate Games has been bringing sporting children and their proud parents together for many years. It’s wonderful to be able to work with the NZCAA and give thousands of aspiring young athletes the opportunity to showcase their talents. “The two events, this year in Palmerston North and Nelson, are a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the hard work amongst our aspiring athletes.” Athletics Nelson’s Nicola Newson says this is the most athletes the club has entered in the Colgate Games for a while. “It’s great that the games have come to Nelson, the standards are higher, the competition

Jordan Stirling-Rowling from Athletics Nelson prepares for the upcoming Colgate Games. Photo: Brittany Spencer. is fiercer and it’s great for our kids to compete against different clubs from across New Zealand,” says Nicola. “A lot of the younger athletes are competing for the first time so it’ll just be a great opportunity and the chance to beat their personal bests, but for the older ones the competitive element comes in and they start aiming for records and medals.” Athletics Nelson’s top guns include 13-year-old runner Jordan Stirling-Rowling and 14-year-old thrower Joe Ford. Both boys have medalled several times at the Colgate Games elsewhere in the country and are expected to do extremely well this weekend. Jordan says he’s "really" excited. “It’s gonna be great, I’m doing the 100m, 200m, 400m and the long jump.” Jordan’s favourite event is the 400m which he is looking to run in under a minute. “There's a few pretty quick

guys so it’s stiff competition, but I’m just going to do my best and run really fast.” The 2016 Colgate Games ambassador and New Zealand champion 1500m runner Julian Matthews of Nelson says he is excited to check out the sporting talent on offer at this year’s Games. “I remember when I competed at the Colgate Games, it was the most nervous I had ever been, but having the opportunity to compete against a great calibre of athletes, really prepared me for my professional sporting career today. As well as medal glory, Nick Willis Scholarships are on offer to athletes who have outstanding performances throughout the Colgate Games. The scholarship gives recipients funds to put towards sports gear, coaching, travel and other resources to help them achieve their athletics goals. The games will be held from January 15-17.

Rain doesn't halt Port's street races Locally Owned and Operated

Brittany Spencer It was a day of drizzle, oil spills and a few slips at Saturday’s Port Nelson Street Races, but that didn’t stop competitors from charging the streets in an effort to become the King of the Port. Ashburton’s Andrew Rudd stayed on his supermoto long enough to take out the King of the Port title. Nelson's Scott Sutherland won the Formula 1 and BEARS classes, Jonny Lewis took out the Formula 3 class and Richmond’s Tobby Tutty claimed first place in the post-classics class. Unfortunately, Motueka-born motocross legend Josh Coppins had to make an early exit from the competition, getting in only a few laps before his bike blew a hole in the piston. Nelson Road Racing Association president Andy Watson says, because of the wet weather the races became a ‘who can stay on the longest’ event, but he was impressed with all of this year's riders. “Even with the bad weather, racing has been good, we’ve had no big crashes and no one in the hospital so it’s good, touch wood.” First-timer Shannan Mako came up from Kaikoura to compete in the event

SportS SPEEDWAY: Nelson superstock driver Shane Harward has won the country's top speedway title. Shane earned the famed "1NZ" after beating the best in the country in Stratford on Sunday. It is his first national title and the first for a Nelson driver since 2011, when Dale Ewers won it. RUNNING: This Sunday is the annual NBS Nelson Striders Half Marathon and 10km along the Maitai Valley Rd. The unique event was inspired by the Nelson Striders running group who hit the headlines back in 1994 when courageous Maitai Dam caretaker Trevor Ruffell came to their rescue, killing an agitated boar that threatened their welfare at Apple Tree Flats along the tranquil valley road. The Boar’s Jaw has since become a soughtafter athletics trophy in the longer distance road running fraternity. To win it, half marathoners have to run or walk closest to their predicted time in the January 17 event. Full details and online entry details at nelsonevents.co.nz

But the finishing post came too soon with Taittinger Rose and champion driver Dexter Dunn finishing second by a head in the $15,000 feature event.
